The National Health Law Program (NHeLP), founded in 1969, is the nation’s leading legal organization dedicated to protecting and advancing the health rights of low-income and underserved individuals and families. With offices in Washington, DC; Los Angeles, CA; and Chapel Hill, NC, NHeLP works at the intersection of health care and civil rights to ensure equitable access to quality, affordable care for all. Its team of more than 60 staff, including nationally recognized attorneys and policy experts, advocates, educates, and litigates to safeguard Medicaid, reproductive health, disability rights, and health equity nationwide.
The Executive Director serves as NHeLP’s chief executive, reporting to the Board of Directors and overseeing an annual budget of $13.7 million. The ED is responsible for strategic vision, organizational management, fundraising, external advocacy, and staff leadership. They will guide NHeLP’s next strategic plan, defend and expand Medicaid and other critical health programs, strengthen revenue streams, and position the organization as an even more visible and powerful voice for health justice.
The ideal candidate has significant nonprofit or public sector leadership experience, a strong background in fundraising and resource development, and a proven ability to manage large, mission-driven teams. A J.D. and experience practicing law are required. The candidate must demonstrate a deep commitment to social justice, health equity, and dismantling systemic oppression, with the ability to build inclusive teams and serve as a trusted advocate in courts, policy arenas, and public forums.
