Friends of Karen is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting families caring for a child with a life-threatening illness. Since its founding in 1978, the organization has provided emotional, financial, and advocacy support to nearly 19,000 children and their families. Today, Friends of Karen serves 450–500 families annually across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, offering comprehensive family support services at no cost.
The Executive Director will serve as chief executive, fundraiser, advocate, and administrator. Responsibilities include leading a multi-year strategic and operational plan, strengthening fundraising and donor relations, elevating brand awareness, and overseeing day-to-day operations. The ED works closely with the Board of Directors, leads a senior management team, and supervises a staff of ~20 professionals across family support, development, finance, and administration.
The ideal candidate is an inspirational, compassionate leader with a demonstrated track record in nonprofit leadership, fundraising growth, and strategic management. Strong financial acumen, operational oversight, and team-building skills are essential. A bachelor’s degree is required; a graduate degree is preferred.
