Overview

The Museum of Worcester (MoW), founded in 1875, is the only organization solely dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting, and sharing Worcester’s history. Celebrating its 150th anniversary, MoW is recognized as one of New England’s leading local history museums, housing a research library of more than 7,000 titles, extensive archives, and artifacts central to the study of the city’s past. MoW also operates Salisbury Mansion, Worcester’s only historic house museum. With deep community engagement and inclusive programming, MoW serves as a “people’s museum,” amplifying diverse voices and stories that shape the region.

The Role

The Executive Director will serve as the chief executive, responsible for strategy, fundraising, operations, and partnerships. Working closely with the Board of Directors and a professional staff of 14, the ED will lead the museum into its next phase, ensuring financial sustainability, modernized operations, expanded visibility, and strong community connections.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned nonprofit leader with:

  • Strategic and financial acumen in operations, budgeting, and grant oversight
  • A collaborative leadership style that fosters staff and board alignment
  • Fundraising expertise with individuals, institutions, and foundations
  • Strong relationship-building skills across diverse communities and organizations
  • Passion for history and the ability to inspire connection through storytelling and public engagement

Experience leading organizations of comparable size and scope, as well as knowledge of Worcester’s cultural and civic landscape, is preferred.
