Overview

The Wendt Center for Loss and Healing helps children, youth, and adults rebuild their emotional lives after loss, illness, violence, and trauma. Since 1975, the Center has been a nationally recognized leader in grief, trauma, and mental health services—offering compassionate, holistic care to thousands of families across the Greater Washington, DC area. With a deep focus on underserved communities, the Wendt Center provides therapy and support on a sliding scale or free under grant programs, ensuring access for all who need it.


The Role

The Executive Director will lead the Wendt Center into its next chapter of growth and healing. Reporting to the Board of Directors and managing a staff of 30 with three direct reports, the ED will oversee strategy, operations, fundraising, and community partnerships. This role combines compassionate leadership with strategic and financial oversight—ensuring that the Center continues to deliver high-quality, trauma-informed care while expanding its reach and impact throughout the DC metro area.

The ideal candidate is an empathetic and collaborative leader with a demonstrated record of success in nonprofit management, fundraising, and organizational culture-building. Candidates should bring:

  • 7+ years of leadership experience in a mission-driven nonprofit setting
  • Proven ability to oversee operations, budgeting, and fundraising efforts
  • Strong understanding of mental health, grief, and trauma services
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills
  • Commitment to compassion, equity, and team collaboration
  • Ability to inspire trust and lead through authenticity, empathy, and accountability

A working knowledge of mental health systems and experience with values-based team leadership are highly desirable.
